Jaslok Hospital is one of the few hospitals in Mumbai which have a very active organ transplantation programme. Besides the advanced facilities for heart and liver transplantations, we boast of having one of the largest renal transplantation and bone marrow transplantation units in the city. Our Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) is one of the oldest in a private hospital in Mumbai.
The subspecialties of our department include:

Beating Heart Coronary Bypass Operations (OPCAB or Off-Pump CABG)
Beating heart coronary bypass operations were first started in Mumbai at our hospital in 1995. Conventionally, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operations are performed using the heart–lung machine, when the heart is stopped for a short period of time until a bypass operation (CABG) is performed for a blocked or narrowed coronary artery. The heart–lung machine supports the circulation during the stoppage of heart; however, rarely, side effects due to usage of this machine can result in complications. These complications are avoided in the beating heart coronary bypass operation, where the heart–lung machine is not used and the operation is performed without stopping the heart with the help of stabilisers—Octopus/Acrobat. This operation results in lesser possibilities of complications and faster recovery. This procedure is being routinely performed by us since 1996.
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery and Robotically Assisted Cardiac Surgery
Minimally invasive cardiac operations are performed by making a much smaller cut (one and a half inch) on the side of the chest, rather than a large cut in front of the chest, as is conventionally done in most open heart operations. Unlike conventional operations, there is no cutting of ribs of chest bones and as the cut is much smaller, the recovery of the patient is very fast with much less pain. A large variety of heart operations done for problems such as valve repair or replacements, coronary bypass (CABG) and birth defects of heart—atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD) etc.—can be performed by this technique.
The minimally invasive technique with thoracoscopic assistance was first developed in India at our hospital in 1995. Since then, over 700 such operations have been performed successfully, with mortality of less than 0.5%.
Installation of the da Vinci Robotic System at our facility is a unique added benefit for minimally invasive cardiac operation.
Surgery for Heart Failure and Heart Transplantation
India has possibly the largest population of patients with heart failure in the entire world–a condition which, many times, is beyond treatment with medications. For such patients, where medication and even conventional surgical treatment has been ineffective, an option of ‘assist devices’ has been made available at our Heart Failure Clinic.
The left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) can be lifesaving for such patents. These devices—HeartMate/HeartWare/CentriMag—not only help save life but also prepare patients for heart transplantation.

Dr. C J Hemantkumar is a consultant Cardiovascular & Thoracic surgeon attached to Jaslok. He has performed more than 15,000 heart surgeries which include surgeries of coronary arteries, valves, carotid arteries, aortic aneurysm, cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial total arterial revascularization with excellent results. He does a lot of bypasses for vascular blocks as well as end arterectomies. He also has great experience in Endovascular Stentings for aortic aneurysms and Hybrid surgeries. He is deeply committed to providing heart surgery to the poor and has conducted hundreds of free closed heart surgeries ( CMC ‘s and PDA’s) at Amravathi, Nashik, Yeovatmal, Pusad, Wardha, Washim etc
Dr Hemantkumar also has special interest in training, education and is a post graduate teacher for MCh & DNB students. He has given post doctoral training of international standards to many surgeons.
