The Gastroenterology Department of Jaslok Hospital is the oldest and most experienced department in a private sector in Mumbai, and has been involved in providing services to patients with the entire spectrum of gastroenterology and liver diseases, paediatric gastroenterology and paediatric hepatology. We have been recognised as a centre of excellence for the treatment of Wilson’s disease by the Wilson Disease Association of the USA. Our consultants have held key positions in national organisations such as the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) and Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI). They have been leaders in their subspecialties of interest.
We are well equipped with state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment. Diagnostic procedures performed in our department include: oesophago-gastro- duodenoscopy (OGD), colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, oesophageal and anorectal manometry and 24-hour pH and impedance monitoring.
Our timings are from 8am to 5pm. We also have round-the-clock facilities for emergency endoscopic procedures such as gastrointestinal bleeding and foreign body removal.
There are regular academic activities including a gastrointestinal (GI) radiology meeting on Wednesdays, GI medicine and GI surgery meeting on Saturdays and case discussions/journal club/theme topic discussions on Thursdays and Fridays.
Therapeutic endoscopic procedures include: o Oesophageal dilatation o Balloon dilatation for achalasia cardia and strictures o Sclerotherapy or glue injection of gastric varices o Variceal band ligation o Polypectomy o Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy o Nasojejunal tube placement o Oesophageal, duodenal, colonic, biliary and pancreatic stent placement o Bile duct stone removal o Argon plasma coagulation for gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) o Radiation proctitis o Bleeding lesions and endoscopic mucosal resection of early cancers o Gastric banding procedures for morbid obesity
The Firsts o First monograph on amoebic liver abscess in 1979 by Dr. O.P. Kapoor, who was associated with Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre till 1985. o First publication on hepatic tuberculosis in 1983 by Dr. H.G. Desai and Dr. R.D. Lele. o Our hospital was the first one in the country to start hepatitis C mandatory testing of blood in 1994. o The first successful living-donor liver transplant in India was performed along with a team from King’s College Hospital, London, on 28th November 1998. o A monograph on “Management of Acute Pancreatitis” in 2006, edited by Dr. Shirish Bhansali and Dr. Sharad C. Shah. o Monograph on “Gastritis” in 2008 by Dr. H.G. Desai. o A global assessment scale for Wilson’s disease was described and published by Dr. Anu Aggarwal, Dr. M. Bhatt and Dr. Aabha Nagral in the journal ‘Movement Disorders’ in 2009, as a joint effort of the Gastroenterology and Neurology Departments. o The experience of radiological intervention in children with Budd-Chiari syndrome was described for the first time in the world and published in an international journal— Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, 2010—by Dr. Aabha Nagral, Dr. Rachna Hasija, Dr. Shaji Marar and Dr. Fazal Nabi. It included the first time in the country where the youngest patient—a child of 7 months with refractory ascites underwent a hepatic vein stenting and a child of 3 years with the same problem underwent a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPSS) procedure successfully. o First publication of experience in India with enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) for patients with Gaucher’s disease in the journal named ‘Indian Pediatrics’ in 2011.
Meetings Organised
We have organised various national and international meetings along with the Department of GI Surgery on oesophagogastric (OG) junction, biliary diseases, intestinal tuberculosis, inflammatory bowel diseases, liver transplantation and colorectal diseases. Paediatric liver updates, update on HIV and liver and critical care issues in gastroenterology and hepatology have also been done. Wilson’s disease support group meetings have been organised in collaboration with other departments.

Patients of Wilson’s disease are seen and discussed every month by Dr. Aabha Nagral and Dr. Pettarusp Wadia along with a dietician, physiotherapist and speech therapist.
Specialty OPDs
The paediatric liver OPD is held on Wednesday afternoon from 1pm to-3pm and specialises in treating children with liver diseases. It is the first of its kind in the private sector hospitals and is run by Dr. Aabha Nagral and Dr. Fazal Nabi along with a paediatric specialist registrar.
Various paediatric liver and GI disorders including biliary atresia, Budd-Chiari syndrome, glycogen storage diseases, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis (PFIC), liver tumours and various causes of hepatitis are treated. Paediatric gastroenterological problems including constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain are also addressed.
The pelvic floor OPD is conducted by a gastroenterologist colorectal surgeon, gynaecologist and urologist on Wednesday morning of every month.
