- About the Department
The gastrointestinal (GI) and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery service of Jaslok Hospital started in 1999 with the establishment of a unit comprising consultants with special interest and expertise in HPB and GI surgery. In 2006, this unit became a separate department and was recognised for the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Surgical Gastroenterology Programme of the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

The department has now evolved into a full-fledged service and has consultants who have specialised in hepatobiliary surgery, liver transplantation, laparoscopic surgery, upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal surgery. This surgical work is backed by expertise in gastroenterology, interventional radiology and endoscopy. HPB and GI surgeons perform complex hepatobiliary procedures which include resections of the liver for tumour, surgery for obstructive jaundice, procedures for portal hypertension and surgical intervention for pancreatitis. With support from hepatology, endoscopy and interventional radiology services, a combined team approach is offered for the management of liver tumours.

In 1998, we performed the first successful living-related liver transplant in the country and the first liver transplant in Western India. Since then, we have performed 42 transplants—which is the largest number in Western India. There are now a wide variety of advanced laparoscopic procedures performed in the department including fundoplication, cardiomyotomy, splenectomy, colorectal resections and bariatric procedures. We now perform a variety of complex HPB and GI surgeries including both open and laparoscopic procedures. Our department is situated on the 20th floor.

Specialty of the Department

We are one of the oldest centres for HPB surgery in Western India and are an academic and training department. We have an array of expertise and equipment available for managing complex HPB procedures. In addition to that, a large number of patients with complex GI surgical problems are treated on an indoor basis.

Expertise

Our surgeons are known for their expertise in treating high-risk patients including those who are turned down for surgery at other institutions. Patients frequently seek second opinions from our surgeons.

We are among the most experienced institutions in treating acute pancreatitis in India since the 1980s. Having performed the first successful liver transplant in Western India, we have significant experience in this field. Complex cases of bile duct injury are managed by multimodal and surgical techniques.

Our surgeons were among those who helped pioneer laparoscopic or minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery. Advanced laparoscopic surgery for oesophageal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia; diseases that require upper GI surgery, bariatric surgery and colorectal resections are all performed by our expert surgeons.
