The Department of General Surgery was one of the first to be established at Jaslok Hospital in 1973 under the able guidance of Dr. Shantilal Mehta.
Since the late 80s, we have a reputation for performing efficacious endocrine surgery— especially of the thyroid, parathyroid and complex gastrointestinal (GI) surgery—under the leadership of Dr. S.K. Bhansali. The Department of General and GI Surgery is situated on the 20th floor and is now a secondary and tertiary referral centre for complex and revision problems.
In the late 90s, we also started conducting laparoscopic surgeries here, followed by hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery including liver transplantation. We now have senior consultants who have specialised in surgical oncology, gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and laparoscopic surgery. This surgical work is backed by expertise in gastroenterology, interventional radiology and endoscopy—which are full-fledged units offering state-of-the-art services.
Our department runs a postgraduate programme in general surgery of the National Board since 1986 and has a 100% pass rate. It also conducts research and has many publications under its name. In addition to that, it has started organising updates/CMEs for surgeons on a regular basis, as well as updates for the exam-going postgraduate residents with eminent international, national and Mumbai faculty.

Dr. Anand joined Topiwala National Medical College, 1977 and passed MBBS in 1981. Joined department of surgery in 1982 passed MS in 1985. He di dhis Fellowship in minimally invasive surgery (FIAGES) in India in 2007. He is affiliated to Jaslok and Bhatia Hospital &faculty as Ethicon institute of Endo-surgery.He has presentations at local, national as well as international level. He has participated in many workshops at National level. His vision is to have a department of Minimal Access Surgery and perform more advanced and complex laparoscopic surgeries.He is also interested in imparting training to residents and to absorb them in the team once they are ready to work.

General Surgery
Dr. Priyadarshi H. Doctor, Medical Director, has been at the forefront of numerous accomplishments since his childhood. He was a national scholar, passed his M.B.B.S. & ranked first in the examinations with sweeping all the awards in various categories. Subsequently he did his M.S. from J.J. Hospital with distinction sweeping all the Gold Medals kept for General Surgery. Due to the Dynamic Track Record he was awarded the Scholarship to attend medical training at Rowley & Whipps Cross Hospital U.K. He was one of the early enthusiasts of Laparoscopic Surgery and has done his first Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in 1991 when the technique was very new in this country and has done pioneering work on this subject. He also has to his credit many Advanced Laparoscopic procedures done for the first time in India. He earned his Fellowship in surgery from the U.K. & Edinburgh.
Has special interest in Breast and Ano-Rectal surgery.
Dr. (Mrs.) Shaila Weling is a Senior Consultant General Surgeon associated with Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre since its inception in 1973. Passed Masters in Surgery from the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai University in 1969, with Distinction. After passing Masters in Surgery went to Toronto, Canada for further training. Joined Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre immediately after coming back to India .
