- About the Department
The Department of Nephrology adds to the glory of Jaslok Hospital from the inception of the hospital till today. Setting up an Artificial Kidney Department (AKD) and providing the services to the patients was a first-of-its-kind endeavour in a private-sector hospital in India. It was started with eight units on the 19th floor with the able leadership of Dr. M.K. Mani and Dr. Chacko Kuruvilla. One of the most eminent personalities treated with haemodialysis at our hospital was Mr. Jaiprakash Narayan. 'JP’ made ‘dialysis’ a household name as it used to come daily in the newspapers when he was on dialysis.

Initially we were conducting all types of dialysis in AKD only; but now we have facilities to do dialysis in all three ICUs also, where it is performed on critically ill patients. We also have the facility of ‘slow low efficiency daily dialysis’ (SLEDD). This form of dialysis is well-tolerated by critically ill patients compared to regular haemodialysis. The result of SLEDD is comparable to continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and, at the same time, it is much cheaper.

We have an active continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) programme at our institution. It is an alternative for regular haemodialysis patients and can be done easily at home after proper training. It is still not very popular in India compared to the European and other western countries. It is safe for very young and elderly patients who cannot tolerate regular haemodialysis quite well.

Our department also does plasma exchange for renal patients, as well as other patients—especially neurology patients with myasthenia gravis, Guillain–Barré (GB) syndrome, severe peripheral neuropathy etc.—as per their requirement.

Another milestone was achieved by the Nephrology and Urology Departments at Jaslok Hospital, when the first renal transplant was carried out by Dr. Mani and Dr. Kuruvilla with the help of eminent urologists: late Dr. B.N. Colabawala, late Dr. F.P. Soonawalla, Dr. M.H. Kamat and Dr. S.S. Joshi in the year 1974. Thereafter, there was no looking back. We have done 2,500 renal transplants till date (2428 live-related donor transplants and 72 deceased donor transplants (Cadaveric)).

We are among the top ten institutes in India who perform renal transplantation surgery and one of the top institutes in Western India. On an average, we do about 100 renal transplants per year—largest number in the state of Maharashtra. Our department is also involved with an active deceased donor renal transplantation programme.
