The Eye Department of Jaslok Hospital is comprehensive and well-equipped with a blend of young, experienced and highly qualified surgeons.
Our services include phacoemulsification cataract surgery, advanced medical and surgical treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, keratoplasty and other advanced corneal surgeries, standard and complicated glaucoma surgery, strabismus (squint) workup and surgical management. Common oculoplastic procedures and complex orbital surgeries are done jointly with various in-house teams as per the need of the hour.
As per our hospital policy, patients from lower social strata are also treated by us with utmost care. Their advanced care is supported by our institute, charitable individuals and organisations. State-of-the-art equipment has long been our hospital’s flagship. We also have detailed history-taking, as well as thorough outpatient and inpatient workup by our team of resident doctors and technicians.
The tests that are routinely performed by our department include refraction, slit-lamp examination, pachymetry, intraocular pressure with Goldmann and air-puff tonometry, retinal exam (with direct, indirect and 90D ophthalmoscopy), fundus camera and optical coherence tomography (OCT), IRIDEX IQ 577 and ZEISS VISULAS YAG lasers, detailed squint facilities with diplopia charting, advanced IOLMaster and A-scan for intraocular lens measurements and Humphrey visual field test.

Comprehensive Eye Care
o Eyesight testing and prescription of glasses with auto refractometer and manual checking
o Intraocular pressure measured by applanation and non-contact air-puff tonometer for glaucoma
o Indirect ophthalmoscopy and slit-lamp examination with 3-mirror lens and 90D lens
o Gonioscopy with handheld 4-mirror lens
o Fundus camera for evaluation of fundus fluorescein angiography, anterior segment and posterior segment color pictures
Ocular Oncology
We offer treatment options for patients with primary ocular cancers (such as retinoblastoma, uveal melanoma etc.) and secondary eye cancers (metastatic). We are well-equipped for conducting detailed assessment and customised treatment for each case. Fellowship-trained ocular oncologist—Dr. Nandan Shetye—is available to assess and plan the necessary treatment. A multidisciplinary approach is used for ensuring appropriate treatment. Our hospital has all the departments (centres of excellence) necessary—Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Onco-pathology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine etc.—for managing patients with malignancies, thereby making our institution a comprehensive cancer care centre.
Glaucoma
We are fully equipped with the latest equipment for diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. All cases with primary or secondary glaucoma are comprehensively managed in our department.
Procedures such as gonioscopy, Goldmann applanation tonometry, non-contact tonometry, ultrasound pachymetry, stereoscopic optic disc analysis, computerised visual field analysis, optic disc photography and retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness analysis by OCT ensures a thorough evaluation of every patient. Treatment is customised in each case. Laser procedures and advanced surgeries are performed in a state-of-the-art operation theatre. Dr. Deepak Sadarangani and Dr. Nandan Shetye have special interest in this subspecialty. Consultants from other departments also manage glaucoma cases.
Neuro-ophthalmology
It is a relatively new and less-recognised subspecialty of ophthalmology. We are one of the first hospitals in the city to offer this service. Dr. Phiroze Patel and Dr. Hemalini Samant have specialised in neuro-ophthalmology. Common cases dealt in this department are optic neuritis, anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy, giant cell arteritis, papilloedema, benign intracranial hypertension etc. For accurate diagnosis, we are well-equipped with efficacious diagnostic tests such as OCT, visual evoked potential (VEP) and electroretinogram (ERG).
Paediatric Ophthalmology
It is an evolving branch of ophthalmology. Children between 0-16 years may take the advantage of this subspecialty. It’s always a challenge to examine children. With the growing incidences of children getting glasses, lazy eyes and squint, this subspecialty is slowly gaining popularity.
Complex cases including retinopathy of prematurity in newborns, as well as cataracts are efficiently taken care of.
Dr. Atul Ursekar and Dr. Hemalini Samant have special interest in this subspecialty.
Medical and Surgical Retina
This has been the flagship of our department since its inception. All complex cases are handled with state-of-the-art facilities. Patients are referred from all over the world for further management. Dr. Phiroze Patel, Dr. Atul Ursekar and Dr. Chinmaya Sahu have a special interest in this subspecialty.
Phacoemulsification cataract surgery is routinely done by all our consultants in the department. Monofocal, toric and multifocal intraocular lenses are routinely implanted.
Fundus fluorescein angiography and laser photocoagulation are used for:
o Diabetic retinopathy
o Retinal vein occlusion
o Macular degeneration
o Prophylaxis for retinal detachment
o Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
o Glaucoma
Squint Clinic
Here, we have the latest equipment and evaluation of squint cases with their treatment carried out routinely. The facilities and services are mentioned as under.
Biometry
A-scan biometry and IOLMaster are used to determine preoperatively the power of lens implant to be used during cataract surgery. Monofocal, multifocal and toric lenses are regularly used.
YAG Laser
Posterior capsular opacification post cataract surgery needs a laser capsulotomy. Narrow angle-closure glaucoma and chronic angle-closure glaucoma need peripheral iridectomy.
Surgical Procedures
Cataract surgery is performed with state-of-the-art Infiniti phacoemulsification machine with monofocal, multifocal and toric lenses. Glaucoma surgery (standard augmented trabeculectomy) and various latest valve surgeries are also performed. In addition to that, penetrating keratoplasty (stand alone or with complicated anterior and posterior segment surgeries), vitrectomy, retinal detachment surgeries with membrane removals and advanced complicated surgeries are routinely done. Lacrimal sac surgery known as dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) and endolaser surgeries are also conducted.
We also perform horizontal and vertical muscle surgeries for squint, and oculoplasty including lid and orbital surgeries with in-house assistance. Laser treatment in the operation theatre and OPD is done for ROP and various other conditions.
Medical Ophthalmology
Patients are referred from other specialties including diabetes, nephrology, neurology, cardiology, dermatology, paediatric, gastroenterology, chest medicine, oncology etc.
We participate in various research projects. Various presentations are done in national and international meetings by our department. Our articles are also published in various journals.

Brief write up
Dr Phiroze Patel joined Jaslok Hospital in January 1992. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and Fellow of Royal College of Ophthalmology United Kingdom .He specialises in phacoemulsificaton cataract surgery and medical -surgical retina. He has made presentations in national and international meetings over the past 30 years. He has been presented many awards and medals. His teaching programme in ophthalmology at Jaslok have been very popular and rewarding. He continues to practise as a referral consultant.

Dr Swapna has done her post graduation in Ophthalmology (M.S. Ophthalmology) from T.N. Nair Hospital, Mumbai, after which she joined Sir Ganga ram Hospital, New Delhi for 2 years as Senior Registrar, where she worked and trained under the leaders in the field and obtained extensive experience in Orbit and Oculoplasty surgeries. She then joined a long term fellowship program in Orbit, Oculoplasty and Ocular oncology at Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai where she honed her technical skills under the guidance of Dr Usha Kim, a stalwart in the field.
At present Dr Swapna is a practicing Orbit and Oculoplasty consultant specializing in plastic surgery of the eyelids, eye socket reconstruction, lacrimal surgeries, pediatrics oculoplastics, cosmetic eyelid and brow surgery, non surgical facial cosmetic treatments (Botox and fillers).
