The Department of Pathology at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, aims to achieve the highest standards in patient care, research and education. Our department is the pioneer for various state-of-the-art technology initiatives in the country. We are dedicated to the need of understanding the basis of disease, teach knowledge to others and apply our understanding to improve medical diagnosis and treatment of patients. We provide diagnostic pathology services in a wide variety of areas, with the most modern technologies available and highly trained specialists and subspecialists who are recognised nationally and internationally for their expertise.
We are one of the most modernised and well-equipped laboratories in the country. All our labs are accredited by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare(NABH) Safe-I. We are renowned by clinicians and pathologists for accuracy of the lab reports. Our consultant pathologists and senior technicians participate in the clinicopathological and oncological meetings with different specialties, on a regular basis.
We also undertake teaching and training of laboratory technicians, MSc interns, trainees of Diplomate of the National Board (DNB), students of Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) and also those enrolled in PhD programmes. Thus, we foster the development of leaders in pathology and related fields. We undertake collaborations for various programmes with esteemed institutes—one of which is in conjunction with Stanford University.
The laboratory is never closed and works 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, always welcoming patients.
Department of Immunology
The Immunology Department began in 1976. First tests started with tissue cross-matching and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing, to cater to the active renal transplantation programme. Tissue cross-matching and HLA typing was also performed for other centres in the country. HLA typing has been carried out on patients undergoing bone marrow transplants, for several research projects and in patients with diseases which are HLA associated, such as ankylosing spondylitis where the association is with HLA-B27.
Other routine tests performed in the department are:
o Hepatitis markers: Anti-HAV (hepatitis A virus) IgG, anti-HAV IgM, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-HB (hepatitis B) core, hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg), anti-HBe, anti-HBs, HEV (hepatitis E virus) IgG, anti-HEV IgM, HCV (hepatitis C virus) antibodies
o Cancer markers: Cancer antigen (CA) 15-3, CA 19-9
o Auto antibodies: Antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-smooth muscle antibody (ASMA), perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA), cytoplasmic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (c-ANCA), antiglomerular basement membrane (GBM), anticardiolipin antibody (ACA), antiphospholipid, extractable nuclear antigens (ENA) profile, antithyroglobulin, anti-thyroperoxidase, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibody, serum cryoglobulin
o Immunoglobulins (Ig): Types G, M and A
o Complement: Component 3 and 4 (C3 and C4)
o Electrophoresis: Serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) and immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE)
o Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): HLA B27, DNA typing of HLA-AB and HLA-DR
o Tissue cross-matching: Anti-paternal, panel cell crossmatch
o Rubella: IgM, rubella IgG, cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM, CMV IgG, herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2) IgM, HSV-2 IgG, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) IgM
o Dengue: IgG, IgM, nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and spot test
o HIV 1 and 2 antibodies
o Western blot
Department of Haematology
The Department of Haematology has state-of-the-art equipment which is capable of analysing all haematological disorders. Our hospital has a busy Intensive Care Department, Oncology Unit and Neurology Unit. Haematology services are geared up to give support and backup to all these departments. We have a fully automated coagulation analyser capable of performing all coagulation parameters and specialised tests.
Facilities are present for investigating bleeding disorders. The interpretation of the coagulation tests done by our department facilitates adequate component therapy in patients with bleeding disorders. Tests for diagnosis and strategy for management of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) are done. We also have a facility for thromboelastography (TEG) assays for measurement of haemostasis and therapeutic management.
We have a state-of-the-art 5-part Sysmex XT-1800i and XT-2000i Differential counter to perform routine complete blood count (CBC) very accurately. This is very important as we have many patients of leukaemia. Also, chemotherapy patients’ counts are regularly followed up by us. We also have facilities for working of haematological malignancies by means of flow cytometry for immunophenotyping of leukaemias/lymphomas, lymphocyte subset enumeration, stem cell enumeration, myelomas and immune deficiencies. We also have a full panel of investigation for haemolytic anaemia, iron deficiency anaemias and anaemias secondary to chronic diseases. Thus, we perform a wide range of haematology investigations to facilitate our clinical colleagues in proper management of their patients. All patients referred with haematological disorders are completely investigated and worked upon, to come to a diagnosis and decide on the treatment strategy.
Department of Microbiology
The Department of Microbiology has existed at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre since its inception forty years ago. Great emphasis is placed on quality control and best practices are followed stringently with internal self-regulation to ensure reliability. In addition, external quality control is carried out with the external quality assessment scheme with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, and reciprocal arrangements are done with local hospitals.
Continuous upgradation of equipment and skills has been carried out. Routine microscopy and special staining techniques are done. The conventional and automated BacT/ALERT 3D cultures including aerobic, anaerobic, fungal and mycobacteria are done for various samples from both indoor and OPD patients. Identification by automated VITEK 2 Compact system is followed, which reduces turnaround time as well as increases the accuracy of the report, in addition to providing minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for various antibiotics.
Various serological investigations are being carried out including test for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), antistreptolysin O (ASO), C-reactive protein (CRP), venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) test, Widal test, detection of rotavirus, indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test for amoebiasis, toxoplasma and leptospira bacteria. Detection of antigens of cryptococcus and Treponema pallidum haemagglutination antibody (TPHA) are also done.
Our department also plays an instrumental role in hospital infection control. There is an active involvement in surveillance, especially operation theatres, ICUs and other critical areas. Implementation of ‘hospital infection control measures’ is strictly followed, which is monitored by the Hospital Infection Control Committee. Guidelines for antibiotic usage in our hospital have also been evolved based on the in-house data in conjunction with standard recommendations.
Blood Bank
It is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) registered, well-equipped and licensed blood bank, fully automated, providing blood and its components for routine and emergency patients. Our blood bank provides whole blood and blood components which include, pack cells, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate and random donor platelets. We also provide single donor platelets (SDP) by apheresis method. Stem cell harvesting is also done for cancer patients. Other tests done are: blood grouping, cross matching, antibody screening and blood testing against HIV, hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg), MP and Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test by chemiluminescence.
Every donation is monitored; the collection process and lab tests are performed with the highest technological methods to protect the patients and donors. All procedures are performed according to stringent FDA and SBTC protocols. We also encourage one and all to donate blood. It is possible to donate 3 to 4 times each year, depending on the type of donation and the eligibility to donate. There are basic qualifications that every donor must meet; most restrictions are because of medical and travel history. The actual donation process is quick, easy and painless.
Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry in Jaslok Hospital is one of the largest of its kind and is counted among the most modern laboratories in the country. All the mainstream tests are performed using state-of-the-art autoanalysers based on dry chemistry technique from the leading autoanalyser manufacturer: VITROS. Our laboratory is also equipped with autoanalysers from other top manufacturers including Radiometer, Osmometer and Transasia. The autoanalysers perform all the procedures from the primary tube sampling to barcode identification to the test result output. Thus, these services have minimal human interface, thereby eliminating the chances of error. Also, quality of the test is assessed by stringent internal and external quality control programmes. Hence, the quality and accuracy of the tests performed here are of the highest standards. The tests performed cover an extensive array of investigations ranging from the most fundamental routine tests such as glucose and electrolytes, to the most advanced, recent early cardiac markers, such as troponin I and N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP).
The array of laboratory services are offered by a team of highly dedicated, sincere, vigilant and experienced skilled technical staff and doctors who are fully committed to maintain the high standard of work and accuracy of reports. We also have a separate lab (STAT) dedicated solely for processing urgent samples, thus making critical stats available instantly for the clinicians, thereby aiding to better patient service.
