The Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital was established in 1973 and is known for being the first radiotherapy facility in a private multidisciplinary hospital in India. The facility was upgraded in 1997 with installation of a digital high energy linear accelerator (Siemens Primus) with 3D treatment, stereotactic radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and therapy simulator. The local area therapy network connects the equipment, and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) connection allows data (patient data, imaging and treatment data) transfer electronically for accurate treatment. This state-of-the-art facility was inaugurated by the then H’onble President of India.
In the year 2008, a second linear accelerator (Siemens ONCOR Expression) with sophisticated intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) with high-end software for treatment planning and quality assurance was installed. This upgraded technology allows precise radiation dose delivery to the tumour area, at the same time protects nearby normal/critical organs. Till date, more than 1200 patients have been treated using this high-tech radiotherapy with encouraging results.
We are now equipped with two linear accelerators, a telecobalt unit, brachytherapy, conventional simulator and three treatment planning systems. On an average, 120 patients are treated daily using state-of-the-art techniques such as three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), IMRT and IGRT. Facilities like CT scan and PET-CT scan are available in-house. The Department of Radiation Oncology at Jaslok Hospital is one of the largest private care centres in the state of Maharashtra.
We have procured a new LINAC (linear accelerator) replacing the Primus linear accelerator. The new Precise Digital Linear Accelerator with two photon energies and six electron ranges with MV IGRT and volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) has been commissioned. The Precise Treatment System from Elekta has been designed specifically to deliver the best treatment and personalised cancer care. Highlights of the machine include intelligent digital coordination of multiple LINAC functions, interactive IGRT solution for accurate patient position verification, fast and effective treatment solution with VMAT delivery, multiple photon and electron energies for clinical flexibility and upgradable solution to support future growth and latest developments.
The Precise Treatment System makes use of multileaf collimators (MLCs) for beam shaping with integrated digital control. ‘iView GT’ is Elekta’s MV electronic portal imaging solution that provides real-time, high quality images using the treatment beam for image acquisition with low dose. Single, double and multiple image acquisition modes are available with movie loop playback, image display and manipulation and on- and off-line workflows with MOSAIQ image management. MOSAIQ is a comprehensive image-enabled electronic medical record for radiation oncology, and Data Director enables archiving, retrieval and management of data to support advanced IGRT techniques. Clinical data has shown that patients benefit from IMRT treatment, but it needs to be performed safely, quickly and efficiently right from planning through delivery. As a result, a rotational IMRT technique known as VMAT has been developed.
VMAT is an advanced radiation therapy technique that delivers high radiation doses precisely to the tumour target, while reducing dose to the surrounding tissues and organs. Using single or multiple radiation beams that sweep in uninterrupted arcs around the patient, it enables the treatment time to be reduced dramatically.
Brief write up
Began career in Regional Cancer Center (RCC) and took active part in cancer awareness and early detection campaign.
After Post-graduation in Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine from Tata Memorial Hospital and Bhabha Atomic Research Center respectively, I was instrumental in development of Radiotherapy facilities in RCC, for which I was awarded a letter of appreciation by the Director of the institution.
After joining Jaslok Hospital in April,1997, I shouldered the responsibility to set-up a modern, state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology department comprising Telecobalt, Dual Energy Digital Linear Accelerator with MLC, Therapy Simulator, Treatment Planning Systems, HDR Brachytherapy, R&V system.
X-Knife Radiosurgery programme was also commissioned for SRS & SRT.
The successful implementation of the modernization of the department was recognized by the then Chief Executive Director.
I have long experience of conventional as well as CT-based planning and have contributed in successfully running 3D-CRT programme and ultimately developing IMRT & IGRT facility at Jaslok Hospital with commissioning of ONCOR Expression Linear Accelerator.
To bolster administrative skills I did a Hospital Administration course from Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

I have 22 years’ experience in radiation oncology; this includes 13 years as full time radiation oncologist at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai,
9 years as Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Indian cancer Society’s Lady Ratan Tata Medical and Research Centre, Mumbai and
2 years as Senior Resident at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. My specialist interest is delivering precision radiotherapy, with special interest in head and neck, breast and gynaecological malignancies.
Till date I have planned and executed the treatment close to 400 cases of IMRT and IGRT mostly in Head and Neck cancers.
I have served as an expert advisor and member technical committee for development of Oncology, in Cama and Albless Hospital which is a women and children speciality hospital of Government of Maharashtra, Prince Aly Khan hospital, Mumbai and Bethany Hospital, Thane. As a part of teaching programme at Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, I have been part of dissertation work of post graduate students training in DNB Radiation Oncology.
I am principal investigator of an ongoing prospective trial “prevalence of HPV infection in newly diagnosed cases of head and neck malignancies” at Prince Aly Khan Hospital, Mumbai.
I have authored chapters on role of radiotherapy in cervical, breast and larynx and hypopharyngeal malignancies.
I have actively participated in various capacities, in more than 200 meetings both national and international and clinical symposia.
I offer a unique package combination of clinical insight with thorough and up to date competencies in developing and running successful radiation oncology departments, education and research to make a difference to clinical teams and the hospital.
