The Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology at Jaslok Hospital is one of the well-known leading centres for both diagnostic and interventional radiology in India. Since 1984, we have been pioneers and trend setters in the field of diagnostic and interventional radiology in India and Southeast Asia.
We extend complete patient care and clinical services under one roof for different sub-specialities, such as general radiology, ultrasonography, CT scanning, MRI, digital subtraction angiography (DSA), women health, mammography, bone densitometry, MR-guided focussed ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) and image-guided (CT and ultrasound guided) interventional procedures.
Our radiology department is a high volume centre, well-experienced in handling routine and complicated clinical cases both in diagnostic and interventional radiology. The Department of CT scan, MRI and DSA are recognized centres of excellence. The Department of MR-guided Focussed Ultrasound Surgery is not only the centre of excellence but also a teaching centre for this path-breaking technology in the Asia-Pacific region.
We are proud to have brought the first spiral CT, first single-source dual-energy CT, and true 64-slice cardiac CT in India, and the first MRI (both 1.5 and 3T) with total imaging matrix (TIM) technology with parallel imaging, first 3D rotational angiography, DSA unit, first automated breast volume scanning (ABVS) ultrasound, first acoustic radiation force impulse imaging (ARFI) ultrasound, first high-end PET scan and first MRgFUS unit in Asia.
We have the distinction to have performed the first intracranial aneurysm coil and carotid stent treatment and the first MRgFUS treatment of uterine fibroid, uterine adenomyosis, prostate cancer and bone tumour in India.
Our department works round-the-clock, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.
Diagnostic Radiological Services:
CT Scan
We have a very high-end, state-of-the-art, single-source dual-energy volume CT scanner capable of head-to-toe imaging. We routinely perform high-end CT perfusion studies on different body parts to analyse the degree and treatment for stroke and cancer.
o CT angiography of the heart, brain, kidneys and other body organs gives information identical to catheter angiography within few minutes, non-invasively. o CT colonoscopy, CT bronchoscopy and all other scanning procedures are done non-invasively. o CT bone densitometry is routinely done to evaluate osteoporosis. o Our dual-energy CT can evaluate the chemical composition of renal and gall bladder stones to decide on appropriate therapy. o Our volume CT scan is superfast and can examine one body part (like head, neck, chest etc.) in just a second. Total body scan is done within 10 seconds and is of great assistance and diagnostic utility in children, ICU patients, trauma cases or any acute emergency.
MRI
We have a very high-end, state-of-the-art 3T MRI with TIM technology, with the best magnetic homogeneity available in the industry. Our MRI can obtain images for both structural and functional studies. We routinely perform head-to-toe (every organ) MRIs in a very short duration due to ultrafast sequences.
o MR perfusion and MR spectroscopy are routinely done to diagnose and classify different cancers and to decide on specific therapy. It helps in assessing various infections, especially in HIV patients and in starting appropriate therapy. It is widely used in brain, prostate, breast and liver diseases. o MR angiography is done for brain, kidney, hands and legs to assess the effect of diabetes and to evaluate the condition of blood vessels during brain stroke. MR perfusion and diffusion are mandatory to diagnose early brain stroke and to select patients for appropriate thrombolytic therapy and save the brain from probable fatal damage. Several high-end MR imaging applications are routinely used at our centre to examine epileptic patients and children with complex brain disorders. o Liver MRI and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCPs) are essential to evaluate patients with liver cirrhosis who are at risk of developing liver cancer. o Functional MRI can map motor, sensory, visual and auditory centres, which is of great help during pre- and post-operative assessment of patients. o Cardiac MRIs are routinely done to assess the viability of heart muscle following a heart attack. o Musculoskeletal MRI is done for various body parts to examine tendons, ligaments and injuries. o MR defecography is routinely done to evaluate disorders of defecations, rectal protrusion, etc.
X-Ray Imaging
The department is well equipped with digital radiography (DR) and computed radiography (CR). They obtain very high quality digital radiographs. In addition to routine and emergency X-ray imaging, different procedures such as barium studies, urograms and hysterosalpingogram are normally performed.
Ultrasound
We have high-end, technologically advanced ultrasound machines that cater to the most basic and advanced scans required by the patients. The ultrasound facility of Jaslok Hospital offers diagnostic and therapeutic imaging and has been the first in the country to perform interventional ultrasound, contrast imaging, elastography and foetal medicine-related imaging:
o Basic ultrasound – abdomen, pelvis, urinary tract, including transrectal and obstetric and gynaecological, including transvaginal scans o Sonomammography with ABVS o Musculoskeletal ultrasound o Imaging of small organs like thyroid, scrotum, neonatal brain etc. o 3D/4D anomaly scan o Colour Doppler for peripheral arteries and veins, abdominal vessels, renal vessels; transplanted kidney; transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), neck and carotid vessels and iliac vessels o Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures like biopsies (kidney, liver, breast lesion, lymph node, lung), thyroid and lymph node FNAC, aspiration of abscess and pigtail insertion o Obstetric procedures like amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, embryo reduction, foetal reduction by cord coagulation, intrauterine foetal transfusion o Intraoperative ultrasound-guided procedures
Therapeutic (Interventional) Radiology
Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focussed Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS)
MR-guided focussed ultrasound surgery is a path-breaking, totally non-invasive procedure used for the treatment of different tumours. It is best described as “Surgery without Surgery”. In this, we map the different body tumours under MRI and destroy them with high-intensity focussed ultrasound. There is no incision, no surgery, no radiation and no general anaesthesia involved. MRgFUS is used to treat different pathologies as follows:
o Tumours – we treat uterine fibroids, uterine adenomyosis, prostate cancer, and primary and secondary bone tumours with this procedure. We have treated more than 900 fibroids and more than 90 adenomyosis till date. o Pain relief – under MRgFUS, we treat facet joint arthritis (joints of the back that are commonest cause of low backache) with excellent permanent results. MRgFUS is also used for knee joint arthritis. o Brain applications – MRgFUS effectively treats patients with intentional tremors, long-standing non-responsive Parkinson’s patients, for destruction of centres in psychiatric disorders and epilepsy. We are in the process of acquiring neuro unit for our MRgFUS.
DSA
Jaslok has a high-end 3D rotational angiography DSA unit capable of performing head-to-toe diagnostic and interventional vascular and non-vascular procedures.
o Diagnostic – we perform different range of vascular and non-vascular procedures for neuro and complete body to diagnose vascular malformations, tumours, bleeding disorders, blood clots, cirrhosis of liver, assessment of kidney and liver donors etc. o Therapeutic – we perform: o Minimally invasive endovascular surgery (interventional radiology) on DSA. o Percutaneous coiling of cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations; occlusion of blood vessels from bleeding arteries in the abdomen and kidneys; post-traumatic bleeding; epistaxis (bleeding nose) etc. Occlusion of the tumour vessels prior to surgery is routinely .performed. o Stenting of any artery in the body (carotid, renal, mesenteric, peripheral) is routinely performed in our DSA department. o Complex interventional procedures like TIPS (creating alternate pathway for blood in cirrhotic liver) either as a permanent cure or in patients waiting for liver transplant is regularly done in our department.
Image-Guided Interventional Procedures
o Biopsies – large number of CT and ultrasound-guided biopsies of any organ are done regularly in our department. o CT-guided Interventional Procedures – complex CT-guided interventional procedures like pancreatic necrosis/abscess, drainages, cyst aspirations, cyst sclerosis etc are routinely done. o Radiofrequency (RF) ablation of tumours – CT-guided RF ablation of liver, kidney, bone and lung tumours are routinely performed under local anaesthesia as an alternative to surgery in our department. o Vertebroplasty – this involves injecting cement in the collapsing vertebra (as seen in osteoporosis, metastasis, etc). CT-guided vertebroplasty is routinely done in our department to stabilize the vertebra, prevent nerve compression and to alleviate the pain. o CT-guided nerve blocks – CT-guided nerve blocks (Coeliac ganglion) of different nerves are routinely done for relieving excruciating pain in cancer patients or in patients with other pathologies. o CT-guided sympathectomy – CT-guided sympathectomy is performed for peripheral vascular disease.
